Hello June! In the blink of an eye, Summer is already upon us. The rainy weeks are over and the weather is starting to warm up, which means it is time to get out there and have some fun in sunny San Francisco! Lucky for you, you are living in one of the best cities when it comes down to the amount of diverse activities around the area. San Francisco is also the center for co-living or community housing, which means that if you choose to live in our affordable San Francisco rooms, you are sure to meet new friends and buddies that are happy to go on some Summer adventures with you! Without further ado, here are some of our hand-picked activities that are going to be happening in San Francisco this Summer!

Music Festivals

1San Francisco is known for its diverse population and therefore has a wide variety of music all around the city. If you are a Jazz lover, the Fillmore Jazz Festival will be taking place on July 6th and July 7th this year covering twelve blocks in the Pacific Heights district. If you are an opera fan, the famous SF Opera will be having several shows both in June and July at the War Memorial Opera House. This year, there will be performances including Don Giovanni, Rigoletto, and many more!

There will also be several live music festivals featuring bands, singers, and more throughout the summer. One of the festivals is the Stern Grove Festival at the Stern Grove Park. These concerts will be happening every week starting in the middle of June all the way to August, and will have many popular singers and a different theme every single week! Best of all, admission is completely free! Another one of the biggest San Francisco music festivals is the Outside Lands Music Festival that will be happening during August 9th to August 11th. There will be over 70 bands performing for 3 days, including Twenty One Pilots, Childish Gambino, and blink-182!

Street Festivals

3

When we talk about festivals, we can’t forget about all the amazing street festivals that San Francisco has that features all different kinds of food and entertainment. The North Beach Festival is one of the biggest street fairs that has been taking place taking place for more than sixty years. This year, it will be happening on June 15th-16th and will have more than 20 food vendors, over 100 arts and crafts vendors, a kid’s chalk area, and Italian street painting. There will also be live music and entertainment at four different stages at the festival.

If you fall in love with North Beach and would like to have a place to stay, don’t forget we have many single rooms and double co-living rooms available in North Beach today, and you can check them out on our website!

Since this part of the city is close to all public transit, the fair is only a bus or BART ride away! Urbanests also has many housing options available near Union Square, check out these rooms!

Moving to a new home can be intimidating, especially in the big city of San Francisco! Sometimes, when moving to a new city, it can be difficult to get involved in a foreign community and make new friends. However, here at Urbanests we always strive to provide a welcoming community for our residents, where you can meet new friends and have fun with a great group of people. You will always be welcomed at all of our properties, and we make moving into a brand new residence fun and easy!

This week, our spotlight is on our 1080 Folsom building, and its superstar resident managers Ben and Collin. This property features many social nights and events where every tenant is invited to join!

Recently Ben, along with the help of one of their wonderful current tenants Emily Mendez-castillo, has organized a number of exciting social events! One of the notable events of late at 1080 Folsom is Game Night, where the tenants are invited to join in on board games, video games, and other fun resident bonding activities. The building tenants frequently enjoy playing Card Against Humanity and Uno, but residents occasionally bring their own games! Best of all, fun prizes are given to the winners of the games.

These nights are tons of fun and we encourage everyone to come and make new friends at your residence!

Last week, Ben organized a double whammy Noodle Night and Game Night! It took place last Friday at 8pm and like always, all the tenants will be invited to join for some delicious noodles along with fun games!

More than a dozen tenants joined and enjoyed the free food generously offered at the party. There was also clean, non-alcoholic cider pong as a tournament, bringing back the college student vibe with mysterious fun prizes given to the winners!

Here at Urbanests, we love our students. For years, we have provided student housing in San Francisco for both local and international college students, and for years, we have been inspired by the passion and commitment to education we have witnessed from these individuals. The students who have passed through our San Francisco student dorm rooms have left behind a beautiful legacy, and today, we here at Urbanests want to do our best to celebrate that legacy.

beard-bonding-community-708440.jpg

This year, we decided to start two new traditions, to honor and support our Urbanests students, both past and present.

The first is our Fall San Francisco Student Housing promotion. We are offering our San Francisco students and tenants a one time $100 off rent credit for a 4-month lease and a one time $200 off rent credit for a 9-month lease through the month of August using the student codes RB100 and RB200, respectively.  Furthermore, in honor of those San Francisco student roommates who always have each others’ backs, we are also offering a ‘refer a friend’ promotion to current and referred tenants, who can receive a $100 rent credit each through the month of August when they use the code RBRAF. We hope to help ease the financial burden of student rent in San Francisco, as a tribute to the many incredible students that have lived in our halls.

If interested, please contact reservations@urbanests.com and mention the promotion and/or your friends name with contact information.

The second way we are honoring our students this Fall, and the reason you are reading this today, is through our new annual Urbanests $750 Student Scholarship! We asked students across the United States to submit a 750 word essay detailing the importance of their major in today’s society. We wanted to see a clear passion for their chosen field of study, a love and lust for learning, and that same degree of creativity that has so inspired us about our Urbanests students over the years.

backlit-bright-dawn-697243

We were blown away with the number of incredible submissions we received, and from the clear passion these students have for their chosen fields! Our team here at Urbanests is humbled by the incredible students who took their time to put their love for learning to paper for us, and we are so grateful at the opportunity to be inspired by all of these future industry leaders.

Unfortunately, there could only be one winner.

And that winner is…

Susannah Bland, a Global Studies Major from Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama!

In her essay, Susannah Bland discussed her experience as a Global Studies Major, an experience that has taken her on a number of life-changing adventures. Susannah’s Global Studies major took her to a remote village high on a mountain in Nepal, where she helped build a community center. To a small room in Kathmandu, where she was given the opportunity to listen to a Nepali woman’s heroic escape from sex trafficking and current work to create an organization to help survivors like herself. Her major has changed her view on her own day-to-day life, as she challenged herself to subside on a class-simulated SNAP budget (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), living on less than $5 a day for food for a Hunger Studies class. Not only did Susannah’s essay underscore how her major has shifted her world views, ignited her curiosity, and pushed her far beyond her comfort zone, it also shone with the passion she feels about her ‘Global Studies Family’, and her overwhelming desire to make the world a better place.

We here at Urbanests are honored to offer Susannah Bland the $750 Annual Urbanests Scholarship for her education at Auburn University. We are so grateful for the large number of amazing submissions we received, and we are looking forward to the years of inspiration and learning that we have ahead with our Urbanests students.

To your unending curiosity and love of learning,

The Urbanests Team.

Today, we are profiling Thatcher Richins! Thatcher is a Motorsport enthusiast, loves anything mechanical, and really knows his way around SF ( read on for some incredible insider recommendations for cool spots in SF!)

Name:

Thatcher Richins

Screen Shot 2018-08-21 at 1.14.46 PM

Where are you from originally?

Sacramento, California

What brought you to SF?

I was here very very often growing up. So, from a young age, I fell in love with the hustle and bustle of city life. I think that kind of vibrant, busy environment is something  I thrive in, personally. I also wanted to move away from Santa Cruz – Amazingly living here was cheaper than the insane population bloat and impossible rental market that came from UCSC!

Tell us an interesting fact about you.

Motorsport is my favorite sport to watch. I watched over half of Le Mans a few years back.

Do you have any hobbies, talents, or interests?

Anything mechanical. Without a garage, recently i’ve been building and painting models of mechanical things real or ficticious.

How are you involved at Urbanests?

I do general operations work for the company, but I also manage the property at 1010 Bush Street. Since I manage the property, I also live there, and I love it. The Balmoral, or 1010 Bush Street.  Lower Nob Hill is a great neighborhood that’s pretty much at the center of everything.

                                   1010 Bush Residences

Do you know any secret spots in the city we should know about?

There’s about a hundred public private spaces in the city, that most people don’t know about. The best maintained one I’ve seen is on top of the Fairmont Hotel.

What is your favorite thing to do in the city?

Riding around between errands or on the way to meet up with people. You’ll never see the whole city just by walking or taking the bus. Always try to take a slightly different route and you’ll be able to get around without your phone in no time.

Got a restaurant recommendation for us?

Yes! Check out Toyose. It’s an amazing late night Korean restaurant in outer sunset. Bring friends, wait times can be brutal before 10pm.
