Hey San Francisco Housing fam! I have a question for you. What is your favorite pastry? Is it a donut? Croissant? Muffin? Something creme filled or chocolate glazed? Or something flakey and savory?

If you are drooling already, you are in for a treat, because today we are spotlighting Mr. Holmes Bakehouse in San Francisco! Specifically, their mystical, magical, and oh so mouth watering cruffins!

But first, a follow up question: Would you leave your SF furnished apartment at 7 AM or earlier for a pastry? Think about it, and lets dive in.

Mr. Holmes Bakehouse is located on 1042 Larkin St, San Francisco, CA 94109, (just a few blocks away from our San Francisco short stay apartments, the Yale and the Adrian in the Tenderloin!). Mr. Holmes offers a wide selection of mouth-wateringly delicious baked goods – everything from the lowly butter croissant to widely innovative variations including the ‘Rest in Peach Croissant’ (filled with Vanilla Pastry Creme, peach jam, oat crumble, and mascarpone whipped ganache), or the Creme Brûlée Danish (smothered in salted caramel, cheesecake filling, and topped with caramel shards).

However, Mr. Holmes is particularly known for their incredible rotating pastry flavors, that change daily. Each day two rotating flavors are available, one in the form of a donut and the other in the form of Mr. Holmes’ world-renowned, buttery and sweet, oh-so flakey and oh-so-famous  cruffin.  For the uninformed, a cruffin is a croissant, shaped and baked like a muffin, filled with a daily-rotating flavor of sweet cream, and finished with a variety of toppings and glazes.

Now, I must warn you, this next paragraph may result in an over-production of saliva, intense hunger pains, or the inability to continue reading due to having gone cross-eyed with desire. You have been warned.

Here is a sample of their monthly menu. Right now, for June and July of 2018,  cruffin flavors include Horchata Cream, Caramel Chocolate Cream, Guava Cheesecake, Key Lime Pie, Chocolate Orange Cream, Maple Malt Cream, and Tropical Curd.

The donut flavors include Strawberry Lemon Verbena, Lavender Mousse, Raspberry Sherbet, Spiced Apricot Jam, Blueberry Lemonade, Blackberry Jam, and Pistachio Whipped Ganache.

Chills. So many chills.

Did you black out? Are you drooling? Have you gone into a sugar-induced coma just at the thought of so much deliciousness? Good. Now that I really have your attention, lets talk logistics.

Mr. Holmes opens at 7 AM, but people start lining up well before that. There is a line for the bakery, and a separate line just for cruffin-seekers. The cruffins are unveiled and available for consumption promptly at 9 AM, no earlier, no later. Be warned, Mr. Holmes has been known to run out of the daily cruffin and donuts in just a few hours, often by 10 AM. The flavors are posted on Instagram, so before you go check to make sure the daily delicacy is up your alley – and if not, there is always tomorrow!

Now, if the pastries are not enough for you (I’m just kidding, we all know the pastries are more than enough for you, but bear with me), Mr. Holmes Bakehouse is also a quintessentially Instagrammable San Francisco spot. From their punny and neon pink “I got baked in San Francisco” sign, to their peace-out logo-shaped mirror, to their light pink and gold pastry boxes, to the “Holmes Sweet Holmes” tiled floor mosaic, this place has too many cute photo-ops! Just look at some of these cute snapshots, taken by some of Mr. Holmes’ avid and sugar-spurred cruffin fans!

So cute! So aesthetic! Would look so amazing on your Insta feed!

But anyways, lets get back to what is really important here… the pastries!

Mmmmm mmmm good!

Now, I ask you again: Would you wake up at 7 AM for a pastry?

If its Mr. Holmes… I know I would.

Spring has sprung! The sky is clear, the weather is warming up, flowers are blooming, birds are chirping, and life is good. You are anxious to get out of your short stay apartment in San Francisco, get outside, and get to work on that summer bod! But when you live in shared housing in San Francisco, where do you go to get a breath of fresh air? Well, don’t you fret, we have got you covered. Even though you live in SF city housing, you also happen to live in one of the most active cities of the world, a buzzing metropolis filled with people biking, hiking, swimming, surfing, kayaking, rock climbing, and more! Plus, there are a number of beautiful spots in or around the city that are a must-see for nature lovers. So jump out of bed in your San Francisco furnished housing, grab your running shoes, dig out your SPF,  and let’s get going!

Bike it out.

sanfran_bikingroutes_214871716-770x513

A great way to get yourself outside and active is getting on some wheels! Bike rentals are available all over the city, like Blazing Saddles or San Francisco Bike Rentals in North Beach – right by a number of our SF furnished apartments including 371 Columbus and 524 Columbus. You can cruise the city and take in the sights freely, or go on a bike tour with someone to lead you to the best spots. You can also try one of San Francisco’s many beautiful bike trails for a scenic ride, like the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito route, starting from Fort Mason. If bikes are not your thing, take a spin on those new electric scooters you’ve seen lying all around the city. A simple app download, and you can whizz around with ease. Either way, wandering on wheels is a cheap, fun, and surprisingly active way to get out of your SF housing and see the city in the sunshine!

Kayak Your Cares Away.

Screen Shot 2018-05-24 at 4.51.52 PM

Change your perspective of the city you live in by seeing it from a different perspective – the water! Grab a buddy and make a day out of it. There are a number of places where you can rent kayaks for the day, including CityKayak or San Francisco Kayak and Adventures. These companies offer kayak rentals, kayaking classes for all levels, and guided tours, so you can pick your poison. If kayaking isn’t your thing, you can always rent a sailboat or jet ski, but exploring the Bay from the water is a great way to cool off and get outside!

Nothing Rocks More Than Rock Climbing.

628762608

Even though it is springtime, SF weather knows no bounds. On a rainy spring day, rather than stay inside your single room in San Francisco, if you want to stay alive while doing something fun with friends, check out rock climbing! It is a killer workout that barely feels like work: challenging, rewarding, and unbelievably fun! Take some friends, and check out Planet Granite, Mission Cliffs, or Dogwatch Boulders. Get to work on that summer body before the sun really comes out to play.

Hike around the Bay.

MuirWoods1-563x276

This one is easy – grab your running shoes, tie your laces, and get out of the door! There are so many beautiful hiking trails all over San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area! You can hike around Golden Gate Bridge to see the sites and take in towering and humbling red woods at Muir Woods. If you want to make a day out of it, head to Marin and hike up Mount Tamalpais until sunset! If that sounds appealing, check out our blog post on Mount Tam  here.

Go For a Swim & Sun In the Sand.

GoldenGateBridge_BakerBeach_MC.jpg

Even though you may live in the middle of a bunch of skyscrapers, you’re on the Golden Coast baby! On a sunny day, there are a number of beautiful beaches nearby where you can go get your fill of sun, sand, and surf. Baker’s beach is the postcard image of your dreams, where you can get your tan on while gazing out at the iconic Golden Gate bridge. Stinson beach in Marin is everything you would imagine of a North California beach – a little cold, a little windy, a little gravely, but oh so beautiful. If you want to drive a little further, Santa Cruz is only an hour away, a SoCal beach town in NorCal, where you can get your fix of acai and sunshine. The beach boardwalk is unlike anything else. But remember, for all Northern California beaches – the water is cold, so bring your wetsuit!

Where are you from originally?

Venezuela

What brought you to SF?

I was in SF to do my Master degree. SF is the place to be for tech, and one of the most beautiful cities in the world. So when I had the opportunity to do my master degree in SF, I could not say no!

Tell us an interesting fact about you.

I really like to do a lot of stuff to keep my day full, which brings my sleep time to a minimum. However, I love to sleep long, long hours (and I do once or twice a year….)

Do you have any hobbies, talents, or interests?

I love to play tennis and baseball. My main talents are to sing, but for some reason most people do not appreciate my singing voice, so I rarely do it outside of the shower. I’m interested in traveling and trying all possible food.

How are you involved at Urbanests?

I am part of the back office, supporting mainly accounting and operations

Do you know any secret spots in the city we should know about? What is your favorite spot in SF?

Well, the Roly-Roty truck for Pork sandwiches is a must if I’m in SF. The second one is the Gateway tennis club pool, where it is always warm and the sun is always shining.

What is your favorite thing to do in the city?

My ideal SF day starts by going to the Farmers market on Saturday, and then walking or biking from there to connect with friends or family for a nice brunch … ideally a brunch with a Bloody Mary or beer.

What’s your favorite SF cafe?

My all-time favorite coffee shop is the small Blue Bottle Coffee that is in the Ferry building. It is fun because they have some of the best coffee in SF, but then you can spend your time walking around the building and looking at the little shops. I would say my favorite restaurant is Nob Hill cafe – I recommend the penne bettola.

Sometimes, you need to get out of the city. We all love the hustle and bustle of renting a room in San Francisco, but every now and then, you crave some fresh air, sunshine, and tall trees. Luckily, your housing is in San Francisco , a city surrounded by a number of unique little towns on the Bay. Today, we are going to introduce you to Mount Tamalpais in Marin, a beautiful spot to schedule a date night, a sunset picnic, a day hike, or your next photo adventure.

IMG_9513

Mount Tam is located in Marin County, just across the Bay Bridge. For your day-staycation, start your morning by exploring Mill Valley, the cute little town right at the base of the mountain. The Mill Valley cuisine scene is largely local, which makes every  quaint dining experience feel extra personal and unique. There are a number of delicious breakfast spots, diners, and cafes located right in Downtown. If you are a coffee connoisseur, then stop by Equator Coffee for a latte that is sure to suit your expert tastes. Alternatively, you can grab something from the locally owned and operated Mill Valley Market, and take it to go sit in the sunny town square, where you can watch some lovely old men play chess or go dog-spotting. After your meal, you should go explore! There are a number of cute little boutiques that make for great window shopping, or you can catch a film at the old theatre. If you are on a date, do not forget to stop and smell the flowers at the charming outdoor flower stand -and maybe even purchase a pretty present for your partner! Once you have had your small-town fill, grab a meal to-go from Sol Food – trust us, do not skip the Sol Food – hop in your car, and head on up to Mount Tam.

IMG_9476.jpg

This Mountain will take your breath away. As you drive up the curving hills towards the entry gate to the park, you are met with groves upon groves of towering redwood trees, a viridescent forest spanning your eyesight. The light beams through the leaves just so, and the whole forest looks like it is bathed in gold. Now is your time: crank the windows down, and breathe in the crisp air.

IMG_9480

If you are exploring Mount Tam early and on a clear day, the view is unbeatable. You can see all the way down to Stinson Beach, and watch the boats floating in from afar. In the other direction is a magnificent view of San Francisco, the skyscrapers rising up to sparkle in the sunshine. If you look just hard enough, maybe you could even spot your San Francisco housing!

P1060180

But, believe it or not, the best days to go to Mount Tam are the foggy ones. On foggy days, if you are lucky, you are perched directly above the clouds. Miles of cotton candy fluff stretch for as far as you can see, making you feel like a verifiable angel from above. It also makes for some absolutely heavenly photographs.

IMG_9520IMG_9529

But the best view comes at sunset, when the entire sky lights on fire. The setting sun brushes the vast sea of rolling clouds and transforms them into a prism of red, pink, orange, and yellow.

IMG_9660IMG_9696

This is when you should lay out your picnic blanket, break out your Sol Food or a bottle of wine, and enjoy. Mount Tam is the perfect place to escape from the city, a great spot to take a first date you want to impress, a must-see for photographers or creative-types, but also just a lovely haven to explore with friends.

P1060270

So next time you need a get away, you don’t need to book a flight to Hawaii! Just hop on your car, cross the Bay Bridge, and aim for Mill Valley. Fresh air, unbeatable views, and adventure awaits.

The Power of Pillows and Poufs

Your SF furnished apartment should be a place that expresses you.  Whether its a tiny dorm room at your school or a shared housing space in San Francisco, your San Francisco housing is somewhere you should feel comfortable in. You should be proud to show it off to visitors!  This may seem difficult to do when you’re ballin’ on a budget. But here at Urbanests, we want to help you find San Francisco room rentals that are both affordable, functional, and that feel like a real home. These decorating tips are easy, affordable, and help make your temporary housing feel as cozy as possible, on a dime.

I am here to tell you how to create a Pinterest-worthy apartment under $60.  And it all comes down to two things: pillows and plants. Today’s blog post is going to focus on all the ways you can use those pillows and poufs to transform your small space. Keep an eye out for part two, where we cover creative ways to transform your space using plants!

PILLOWS

One way to turn drab into fab is by spicing up your budget furniture with fun pillows.

It may be likely that you picked up your couch on the side of the road with a “FREE” sign on it.  Or maybe you’re rocking the mattress-on-the-ground look in your San Francisco room rental. Whatever your situation, your short stay apartment can all be salvaged with the right pillows.

Screen Shot 2018-04-04 at 12.54.01 PMThese beds (even the ones without frames, sitting on the ground) are all aesthetic and utterly gorgeous, and made possible fully by their pillows.  Pillows can be as vibrant or as neutral as you like – but the key is to have them, and a lot of them!

PILLOWS & POUFS

Tired of people sitting on your bed every time they hangout at your apartment? Find a cheap chair or stool.

Throw a colorful bohemian pillow on any boring neutral colored chair and it’ll become the hottest seat in the house.

Plenty of stores are stocked with fluffy white stools that have your name written all over them.

If you don’t have much space and can’t find room for a permanent piece of furniture, find yourself a floor pouf! You can store one of these guys under your bed and take it out only when you have guests over.

You can find all the best budget pillows at places like Home Goods, Marshall’s, TJ Maxx, Cost Plus World Market, Ross and Target.  Also check out your local thrift stores for some one-of-a-kind- finds!
